The Malay chicken was the first of the large Asiatic fowl to be introduced to the West. Its unique appearance captured attention, but it was often criticized as a general breed. Historically, as a meat-producing bird, the Malay had both detractors and supporters. Some people found the meat to be coarse and dry, while others praised its firm texture and substantial meat yield. The Malay tends to be lean, which is beneficial in tropical climates, and it does not accumulate fat on the breast.
The American Poultry Association recognized the Malay chicken in 1883, starting with the Black Breast Red variety. The White, Spangled, Black, and Red Pyle Malays were not recognized until 1981.
Over the years since its discovery, the Malay has played a significant role in breeding programs, particularly for crossing to create other breeds. Many breeders have utilized the Malay to rejuvenate lines of various Asian fowl, from Games to Longtails, as it seems to impart strong vitality.
The Malay chicken possesses several distinctive characteristics. The crow of the rooster is hoarse, short, and monotonous, resembling a roar. It has small wattles and is often bare on the throat and breast. The comb is low, thick, and shaped like a strawberry. The beak is yellow, short, broad, and hooked. The expression of the Malay gives it a snakelike and fierce appearance, with its pearl-colored eyes and prominent brows enhancing this look. The Malay features a small red walnut comb, wattles, and earlobes. Its feathers are close to the body, lacking fluff, and are firm, narrow, and glossy, exhibiting a lustrous sheen when seen in daylight. The legs are yellow with remarkably large scales. Males typically weigh around 9 lbs, while hens weigh about 7 lbs.
